[edit] Background

The American College of Medical Genetics (ACMG) was founded in 1991, and is located in Bethesda, MD. The ACMG provides education, resources and a voice for the medical genetics profession. To make genetic services available to and improve the health of the public, the ACMG promotes the development and implementation of methods to diagnose, treat and prevent genetic diseases. The increased adoption of the ACMG Newborn Screening recommendations nationally has had a profound affect on the ACMG. They have long shared a special connection with Genetic Alliance: Genetic Alliance founder Joan Weiss was also a founding member of ACMG. Now the organizations pair up for the Advocates Partnership Program, which sponsors advocate participation in ACMG’s annual meeting. The membership of ~1400 biochemical, clinical, cytogenetic, medical and molecular geneticists, genetic counselors, and other health care professionals committed to the practice of medical genetics last convened in Phoenix, AZ, March 12-16, 2007.
