Individuals who suffer with illnesses that have eluded diagnosis are virtually invisible to the medical profession. Each physician who is unable to identify the cause of the person's problem assumes that the next physician will. There is no way for them to know that in the end, no one diagnosed the problem.
In Need of Diagnosis, Inc. (INOD) serves as a resource center for those who have pursued the avenues offered by orthodox medicine without finding help. INOD does not diagnose but it can sometimes identify unexplored options which may lead to help.
INOD also advocates for increased accuracy and timeliness in diagnosis. They are currently lobbying to create a board certification in Diagnostics. Though there are physicians who diagnose within their specialty field, no physician is trained to deal with illnesses that have signs and symptoms that cross the lines of several medical specialties. There are also no physicians who are trained in rare diseases, of which more than 7,000 have been identified.
