[edit] Background
The National Coalition of Heath Professional Education in Genetics (NCHPEG) is a nonprofit educational organization located in Lutherville, MD, just north of Baltimore. NCHPEG is a coalition of professional organizations, academic institutions, commercial/corporate entities, governmental agencies, non-profits and consumer groups, and individuals who promote health professional education and access to information about advances in human genetics to improve the health care of the nation. Members include professional organizations (e.g., American Medical Association, American Society of Human Genetics), academic institutions, commercial/corporate entities (e.g., GlaxoSmithKline), governmental agencies, non-profits and consumer groups, and individuals. Each member organization has a NCHPEG representative serving as primary communication with NCHPEG.
NCHPEG is concerned with major trends in medical genetics. The increasing number of results from genome-wide association studies emphasizes the need to educate providers and the public about the role of genetics in common disease. Further, providers need a better understanding of the relationship between research findings and clinical implications--it's a lengthy timeline before tests would become available and even longer before there are genotype-specific interventions.
