[edit] Background

Founded in 1978, the National Society of Genetic Counselors started as a small group of genetic counseling students and practicing genetic counselors that were interested in the development of a professional organization. As membership in NSGC grew, members initiated advocacy efforts, continuing education, publications and various position statements. Their biggest accomplishment since their inception has been the progression toward securing licensure for genetic counselors. Currently the NSGC is working on expanding access to genetic counseling services, promoting an organization culture, and positioning genetic counselors as key players in the integration of genetics across the healthcare spectrum.

Coming up is the NSGC Annual Education Conference (AEC), which will be held October 24-28, 2008 in Los Angeles, CA. The NSGC Short Course will be held October 23-28, 2008, also in Los Angeles.
