[edit] Background

Progreso Latino, a community-based, non-profit organization founded in 1977, has been working closely with Genetic Alliance's Community Centered Family Health History Program. Progreso Latino's goal is to help the immigrant community achieve greater self-sufficiency and self-determination. Originally formed to meet the needs of the then growing number of Colombians coming to Rhode Island to work in the textile mills, Progreso Latino now serves a diverse Latino population as well as immigrants and refugees of other European, African and Asian nationalities. In doing so, they have become the largest Latino non-profit, community-based agency in Rhode Island. PL’s racially and ethnically diverse staff of 25 strives to improve the Latino and immigrant community’s well being by responding to their problems with creative solutions. They believe that it is critical to encourage and support these individuals, while helping them to become self-sufficient and productive citizens. The agency’s programs include social and immigration services, job development, health education and screening, youth and senior citizen initiatives, pre-schooling and adult education.

Progreso Latino's next big event is their Annual Event, September 26th, 2008.
