Vaginal Atresia
[edit] Definition
Vaginal atresia is a birth defect in which the vaginal opening is blocked or or poorly formed.
[edit] Description, Signs and Symptoms
Vaginal atresia is present from birth but is often unrecognized until adolescence, when bleeding or abdominal pain require a physician's checkup. It is often accompanied by the absence of a uterus, in which case the disease is known as Rokitansky-Mayer-Küster-Hauser syndrome, or RMKH syndrome.
[edit] Inheritance
Some familial associations suggest that the condition may be inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern from the father.
[edit] Demographics
It is estimated that vaginal atresia occurs in approximately 1 in 5000-10000 female births.
