WikiGenetics:About

From WikiGenetics

Jump to: navigation, search

WikiGenetics is an open source, user-generated encyclopedia on human genetics for the public. It provides credible and up-to-date information on human genetics.

WikiGenetics was initially created by Genetic Alliance in 2007, and grows in value through the contributions of countless volunteers. A professional advisory board and an editorial board comprised of experts in genetics, genomics, services, policy, and education developed the basis of WikiGenetics. Currently the editors work on maintaining its quality and keeping its literacy level appropriate for the public.

Unlike print sources, WikiGenetics is continually updated. We invite each user to maintain and enhance the Wiki’s value by editing content. Users can add or fix links, update information, or post notice to a community portal that updates are needed. User contributions sustain the high quality of WikiGenetics.

WikiGenetics requires references as a basis for all contributions and edits to ensure that it remains a highly credible resource based in science. Opinions, hunches and hypothesis without references will be deleted. Most importantly, remember that WikiGenetics is for the layperson with little or no science background. Let’s begin with what is here and raise the bar for excellence, in the Wiki itself, and through the Wiki, for the community.

WikiGenetics is powered by MediaWiki, a free, open-source wiki software program that powers some of the most popular wikis across the world, including Wikipedia.

[edit] Wiki: Quick Collaboration on the Web

Wiki is a web-based application that allows users to view and to edit pages. The term "œWiki" comes from a Hawaiian word "œWikiwiki", which means "fast" or "quick". In fact, wiki enhances quick collaboration among users. Imagine how long it would take if one author tried to write and continually update a comprehensive encyclopedia on human genetics for the lay public. Now imagine the power of the entire genetics community participating in the development of the encyclopedia. Some may write about human genome projects, some may add internal or external links, some may correct spelling errors or grammatical mistakes, and others may rephrase sentences or words. Any user can be an author or editor! And it's fun to contribute! By sharing our knowledge, we can grow WikiGenetics efficiently and effectively.
